Assistant Professors of Bioethics and Medical Humanities at UAMS
The Division of Medical Humanities in the College of Medicine at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) seeks two dedicated, energetic individuals to join our team as full time, tenure-track faculty at the level of Assistant Professor.
A faculty appointment in our department brings opportunities and expectations in all four of the core missions of an academic medical center: education, clinical service, scholarship, and service. Applicants should demonstrate clear interest and experience in ethics and humanities education across a variety of populations including undergraduate healthcare professional students, graduate medical trainees (house staff), clinical staff and faculty. These positions also carry the expectation of active participation in the clinical ethics consultation services at both an adult and a pediatric hospital. Experience, knowledge and interest in research ethics are pluses. Applicants should demonstrate capacity for successful and meaningful scholarship related to the fields of ethics and humanities. Both positions offer hard-money salaries and scholarly support although candidates who demonstrate the possibility of securing extra-mural funding (as a PI, co-I or consultant) will be considered favorably.
Established in 1982, the Division of Medical Humanities (http://humanities.uams.edu) provides ethics education, consultation and other support throughout the institution and its affiliated partners, including Arkansas Children’s Hospital. The Division is particularly proud of its many offerings by nationally recognized faculty in a broad range of medical humanities, including literature, history, art, and law. Also, the university has several initiatives in neuroscience, data warehouse and bioinformatics, as well as personalized medicine that all require careful ethical and humanities considerations. These and other initiatives provide vast opportunities for bioethics and humanities scholars to participate in substantive, meaningful work.
Applicants must have a terminal degree in a humanities discipline, law, medicine, nursing, or other health profession, with a focus on or experience in bioethics/medical humanities. Salary will be commensurate with rank and experience, in consultation with the AAMC’s national medical school salary survey for PhDs in bioethics. Review of applications will begin in late October 2016 and continue until the position is filled. Applicants must be prepared to start no later than July 1, 2017. To apply, an applicant should send through email a cover letter, CV, three letters of recommendations, and a sample of scholarship to:
Carol VanPelt, Administrative Assistant, UAMS/Humanities (email: vanpeltcarola@uams.edu).
