Edinburgh Medical Debate: ‘Patient Consent: Do Doctors Really Know Best?’

Join the Edinburgh Medical School and Edinburgh Medical Students Council for the inaugural Edinburgh Medical Debate. The event will take place on 22th September 2015 in the Playfair Library, Old College, Edinburgh.

Refreshments will be served from 1730 with the debate commencing at 1800. This is a free, ticketed event. Please register for tickets on this site to guarantee your place.A drinks reception will follow the debate.

A panel representing Medicine, Law and the Edinburgh student body will debate the motion:

“This house believes that “Mongtomery vs Lanarkshire” erodes doctors’ clinical judgment in communicating with patients about their treatment, and will compromise patient care.”

The case, recently debated in the Supreme Court, concerned a complication called shoulder dystocia in a baby who’s mother subsequently claimed damages because doctors did not inform her of this risk (increased due to diabetes in the mother). The Supreme Court upheld the mother’s case and allowed the mother to recover damages on behalf of her child.’
