‘Phenomenology Four Ways: An International Workshop’

9 – 5.30pm, Tuesday 28 May 2019
Priors Hall, Durham Cathedral, Durham

Hosted by the Institute for Medical Humanities, Durham University with the generous support of the Wellcome Trust

Invited speakers:

Respondents: Ben Alderson-Day, University of Durham; Annamaria Carusi, University of Sheffield; Luna Dolezal, University of Exeter; Joel Krueger, University of Exeter

The Institute for Medical Humanities seeks to improve health through an enhanced understanding of human experience. Central to this work is a critical interrogation of how we produce knowledge about experience, the nature and sources of that knowledge and the ways experiential knowledge and evidence are mobilised within policy and practice. “Phenomenology Four Ways” is the second in a series of workshops exploring methodological opportunities and challenges in this endeavour.

“Phenomenology Four Ways” brings into dialogue six eminent researchers at the forefront of phenomenological psychopathology, microphenomenology, Descriptive Experience Sampling, and Latina Feminist phenomenology. Through pre-circulated readings and high-level presentations on methodology, the workshop will be an opportunity for robust facilitated discussion about the use of phenomenology, what it affords, achieves, does and perhaps does not or cannot do.

We invite scholars at all career stages who work in critical medical humanities or whose work engages phenomenological approaches to the study of health and illness to join us in Durham on Tuesday 28 May. The workshop is free to attend and refreshments will be provided throughout the day, with a wine reception to conclude proceedings.

Places are strictly limited and registrations are essential. We ask all prospective participants to commit to the full programme and will circulate recommended readings in advance.

“Phenomenology Four Ways” will be chaired by Angela Woods, Deputy Director of the Institute for Medical Humanities and Co-Director of Hearing the Voice. For any queries please contact IMH Administrator Jane Abel.
