Maclagan Prize PhD Scholarships 2017/18: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the School of Law
Deadline: 30th April 2017
The J Kenyon Mason Institute for Medicine, Life Sciences and Law will offer two Maclagan Prize Scholarships to students wishing to pursue a PhD under the auspices of the Institute.
Details about the work of the Mason Institute can be found here: http://masoninstitute.org/
The topic of the PhD research project must be within the broad areas and themes of the Mason Institute – that is, ethical, legal, social and political implications and impacts of new technologies and practices in medicine and the life sciences, which are likely to have an ever greater and deeper impact on the everyday lives of individuals, groups and societies. Please note this can be in ANY related discipline – not solely law. Scholarships can be awarded to those who have already completed Masters work, including those who are completing and LLM or MSc (or equivalent) and are intending to apply for a PhD in the relevant school.
It is expected that the successful candidates will begin their studies in the academic year 2017/18, that is, either in September 2017 or January 2018. Alternative commencement dates are possible on good cause shown.
The first step is to ensure that you have registered (or have applied) for a PhD in a relevant school with links to the Mason Institute. The second step is the completion of this form and a supporting paper of up to 1,000 words (including footnotes) on how your research would help interdisciplinary working between one or more relevant disciplines. The quality and rigour of which will be assessed by members of the Mason Institute Executive Committee or their designates. Your paper must be your own original work, and you should not have used it in any other context. It will be judged on its academic merit. Your paper should be appended to this form and returned to the email address given below.
Scholarship amount: £2,000 per annum for three years of a full-time PhD (total award £6,000) or £1,000 per annum for six years of a part-time PhD (total award £6,000).
Number of awards: two scholarships on the above terms are available for 2017/18.
Process:
Applications for this scholarship should be made by completing this form and emailing it to law.pgscholarships@ed.ac.uk by 5pm on the 30thApril 2017. It is a condition of eligibility that any applicant for an award has also submitted a complete application for admission (including supporting documents) to the PhD programme in the relevant school by that same closing date and that you have stated on your online application that you are applying for this scholarship.
Applications received after this deadline will not be considered. Successful applicants will be informed by email by the end of May 2017 and the scholarship will be awarded from the start of their studies. The Mason Institute reserves the right to make an offer that is conditional on suitable performance in masters studies that are on-going.
In considering applications, we will have regard in the first instance to this form and the supporting paper, but we may also consider any information, including references, submitted as part of the application for admission. Nonetheless, this form must be completed in full, even where this duplicates information submitted as part of your application. You may copy and paste material from your application as appropriate.
The scholarships will be awarded principally on academic merit, but other considerations, including the extent to which the candidate will benefit from this award, will be taken into account. Applicants should also specify if they have experience in running seminar series or events and using social media. Although not mandatory, an interest or experience in this area will give additional weight to your application. The Mason Institute expects its PhD scholars to participate fully in the academic life of the Institute.
