Job Purpose
This is a 1-year part-time research position to contribute to the Wellcome Trust funded research project investigating the relationship between science fiction and the medical humanities. The project pathfinds for a future large-scale research project by developing a portfolio of exploratory activities and outputs. The Research Assistant will work alongside the Principal Investigator (Dr Gavin Miller) to ensure that these activities and outputs are accomplished to a high standard.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- To provide high-level research support to the grant holder including handling routine communications with the project’s developing research network.
- To contribute to and manage an online database of relevant sources as a resource for future research.
- To pro-actively manage and maintain the project’s academic blog and social media presence.
- To assist the PI with the preparation and editing of a themed academic journal issue.
- To be responsible for the preparation and organisation of project workshops and conferences, acting as first point of contact for attendees and contributors.
- To be responsible for the organisation and administration of a themed creative-writing competition.
- Assisting with the preparation and editing of a volume of prize-winning creative writing entries.
- To liaise with PI, IT developer, School of Critical Studies administrators, and colleagues in the Medical Humanities Research Centre as appropriate.
- Any other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator.
Standard Terms & Conditions
Salary will be on the University’s Research and Teaching Grade, level 6, £27,057 – £30,434 pro rata to 7 hours per week.
The funding for this post is for 1 year in the first instance.
New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.
The successful applicant will be eligible to join the Universities’ Superannuation Scheme. Further information regarding the scheme is available from the Superannuation Officer, who is also prepared to advise on questions relating to the transfer of Superannuation benefits.
All research and related activities, including grants, donations, clinical trials, contract research, consultancy and commercialisation are required to be managed through the University’s relevant processes (e.g. contractual and financial), in accordance with the University Court’s policies.
