Call for Proposals: Glasgow Medical Humanities Network Symposium, University of Glasgow, Wednesday 15 May 2019
The Glasgow Medical Humanities Network Symposium is the first event under the auspices of the new Wellcome Trust funded Glasgow Medical Humanities Network. The Symposium will bring together expertise from across Glasgow’s Universities and Research Organizations to explore new possibilities for collaboration, and to identify the distinctive strengths and interests of our local context.
The symposium will be held on Wednesday 15 May 2019 in the Wolfson Medical School Building on University Avenue from c.10am-5pm, and is open to academics, postdocs, research students, informational professionals, and curators from across Glasgow and beyond.
We invite proposals for the symposium that deepen existing research strengths, develop new areas of research, or which draw upon the academic and civic resources of our city. The symposium is responsive to your needs and interests, so we welcome new ideas from a variety of (inter)disciplinary perspectives alongside work in established areas such as mental health and illness, ancient medicine, reproductive medicine, food and nutrition, public health, and end of life studies. The Symposium will conclude with a conversation inviting feedback on the future direction of the Glasgow Medical Humanities Network.
We also welcome proposals from researchers who would like to ‘test the waters’ with a view to entering the medical humanities.
We particularly encourage proposals in the following formats, which are intended to maximise participation and interchange:
- Panels of 2-4 persons, with each member giving an accessible 5-minute presentation addressing a research topic, methodology, or particular collections strength.
- Brief, accessible ‘provocations’ of 5-10 minutes, intended to challenge existing assumptions and promote new themes, approaches, methods. Provocations might be individual presentations or paired.
- Lunchtime ‘stalls’ showcasing a particular research topic, project, cluster, collection, and so forth.
We are also open to proposals for new and different formats.
If you’re interested in contributing, then please reply to arts-medhums@glasgow.ac.uk with a brief description of your idea by Friday 29 March 2019. Please send text in the body of an email or as word .doc (not .pdf). Descriptions should be brief (around 50-100 words), and give a title for the proposal, a description of the activity, and a brief account of its significance and interest.
We aim to confirm a programme by mid-April 2019.
